Converting a physical system to a Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 SP1 R2 virtual machine

Converting a physical machine to a virtual machine can be a bit of an arduous task under many virtualisation solutions, and the various Microsoft solutions are no exception. Microsoft have released the VS Migration Tool Kit, however this unfortunately requires ADS 1.0 to be deployed. In my instance this isn't suitable. However, what you should realise is that it's simply possible to make an image of the hard disk, restore it and then quickly wap Windows on top again, as the quickest hands-free fix to sort any BSOD or driver issues (if required).

Keeping track of the new hotfixes for Microsoft software

Keeping track of the new hotfixes from Microsoft can be a bit of a pain in the arse. Just installing them blindly on a box from the update services, when they come around, is just a little too cavaliere although there are a number of various resources to help; various webpages, tools, etc. However, Microsoft have just opened up a new hotfix ‘blog herewith the following schedule. You might find this a bit more palletable, if you're deep into a feed aggregation addiction.

First time order with Dell..

I've been toying with getting a laptop recently, to supplement the one I have from work. I'd finally settled on getting a Macbook, and was planning on waiting until more was announced about the new, secret-ish, ultra portable product. However, something else has been playing my mind, and that's the Logitech G25. It's an affordable steering wheel, from Logitech with a half decent H-gate and sequential shifter, 3 pedals, a full 900 degree rotation wheel with 2 paddle shifters, all with hand sitched leather.

debian-40r1-i386-netinst.iso on Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1

Having trouble booting this version of the network installer for Debian under Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1? Supply it with the following kernel options at the “Press F1 to install” screen: 8042.noloop clock=pit If you want to know why this works then carry on reading.. Still here? This is probably quite boring, so I don't blame you if you give up half way through! Generally an OS gets the current time from the CMOS during startup, and then sets up a timer to generate periodic interrupts.

Blizzard IV: The results

I thought I should round this set of blog entries off, as it'll clear up some discussion I've had on various forums about this job prospect. About 2 weeks ago I got the results from my interviews with Blizzard. I received several phone calls from them whilst I was out and about for my current employer. Eventually I got an email from my contact asking what number was best to get me on and I responded, apologising and detailing my details.

Castlecoombe race track is under threat. Again.

Once again Castlecoombe race track in Wiltshire, which is the second oldest track in the UK, is under threat again. During the summer it was slapped with a noise order preventing the track from hosting the F3/British GT event and it's now under threat from complete closure. As always there's a petition against this, which can be also found online here. If you're in the area, or have ever been to Castlecoombe and had a good time, then you might want to spend a minute or two of your time signing it.

Dear Microsoft (Alert: rant)

Why is csccmd 1.1stillnot publically available for download (yes, it is massively different from version 1.0)? I first required this excellent facility a little over 2 years ago now - having used it multiple times to extract files from the CSC since, without having any problems, I can only assume its because its been forgotten. This is a bit of a shame, especially given the amount of trouble I had to get that file officially then, apparently it's even worse now - unless you have no qualms with “other” resources.

Windows ‘Centro’

A few days ago ‘Centro’ got renamed to the Essential Business Server (EBS). This seems like a bit of a cock up, to say the least. Maybe I should step back. Not many people are familiar with Centro. I mean EBS. Once upon a time (way back in 1997) there was BackOffice Small Business Server, a product developed by Microsoft for the small business, bundling many of the commonly used features into a nice little product.
